First dance lighting roses effect

I use some amazing lighting effects to compliment the sound system at various types of function.  One of these effects is able to project some beautiful shapes and colours such as pink roses for example.  This looks fantastic for a first dance at a wedding.  Here is a quick video clip of what it looks like:

Drum n Bass at a Wedding?

Many wedding DJs would run a mile if you suggested that they play a bit of your favorite Drum n Bass at your wedding, however as I am fully aware everybody's tastes are different, and music is key to a great party.  Although DnB may not be to everyone's taste, I do enjoy it as did this crowd:

Natalie and Joel, congratulations, you and your guests were amazing, it was a pleasure to provide my services to you a couple of weeks ago.

Professional Hampshire wedding DJ

The weekend is nearly here and all my preparations for this weekends' wedding in Hampshire are well underway.  The music requested by the bride and groom is ready alongside my comprehensive collection, and this time I am also providing a microphone and pa speakers for the speeches to ensure that every word is clearly heard by everyone.

There's an app for that....

2009 and 2010 have seen this phrase used a lot, and I am quite sure this will continue.  The phenomenon which is the iPhone never ceases to impress me.  I have had my trusty iPhone 3 for 18 months, and it has been one of the most useful bits of technology at my disposal.

This morning for example, I was just about to set off on a journey from Horsham to Croydon.  I had to be there by 9am, and I fired up the iPhone Maps app just to check the state of the motorways.  One of the settings of the Maps application allows you to see if there is any traffic on the main roads.

As the screen appeared, it was obvious that my usual route was completely jammed with slow traffic which would have made me very late for my appointment.  As it happens, I used an alternative route and got there early at 8:30am.

That is a really useful app :)

Congratulations to Anna and Chris on your wedding

It was a real pleasure to DJ at Anna and Chris's wedding party at Marwell Hotel in Hampshire last Saturday.  Anna and Chris compiled a list of great requests for me to play on the night, and I provided the PA for the band who blew the audience away with their incredible talent.

If you are after a very very entertaining band, I can highly recommend Paul and Ryan of Rayguns look real enough!  This pair of nutters played an amazing mash up of great tunes - pure genius :)

Anna and Chris, thank you so much for choosing me to be part of your big day.

Time for a new van

My trusty 2003 Vito 110cdi has been replaced!  I now have taken delivery of a lovely new Mercedes Vito Sport, and this time instead of being white van man, I am silver van man.  At it has air conditioning,  I will arrive more refreshed to every gig, and of course it will not look out of place at some of the venues I play at, not to mention increased reilability.  Some DJ's turn up in a rust infested pile of scrap, not me!!

Now, I wonder how many guests will be trying to get into my new van at the end of a function thinking it's a blinking taxi......

Filesharing

An interesting article on illegal filesharing in the Irish Republic on the BBC website gives us a flavour of what may be to come in the UK.  This crime is often overlooked here, but it does look like things are about to change.

As a professional DJ, I do have to buy my music from legitimate sources, and my monthly spend can be anywhere between £100 and £200 which I am happy to do.  Am I the only one supporting our music industry?  Sometimes I feel I am!

Why do you need such a complex deck for just playing a few tunes?

My colleagues often ask why I use such a high end mixer and CD player combination when I DJ for weddings and birthday parties.  Well, here is one example of why this combination is so good:

Currently, I use a pair of Pioneer CDJ-2000 media players and a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer.  The CDJ's are without a doubt the most amazing CDJ on the market.  The sound quality is awesome, the user experience is full and simple at the same time, and the choice of media I can play from is comprehensive.  I can play from audio CD, CDR, DVD, USB storage, iPods, SD cards, or using RekordBox on the MacBook.  That pretty much covers every eventuality I could be faced with!

The mixer is as you may expect a very high quality device which also has an extensive effects section.  This came in really handy last week when I was DJing at a wedding party and playing a Rolling Stones track of a "best of" compilation CD.  It became evident during this track that the family were huge Stones fans, and I would have to play a couple more hits from the same CD.  Without the roll effect on my DJM-800, this would have been impossible at this time.  What I did was this:

As the first track finished, I set a 1 bar roll going on the track which allowed me enough time to select another track on the playing CD, and play it as the 1 bar roll finished.

Net result = everyone still on the dancefloor, and the client was happy.  Let's see you do this on a simple mixer-CD combo then!!

Now, I know these units are expensive, but the cost of owning them is in real terms very low as they do not depreciate, but that's a topic for another blog entry!

More info on Pioneer's state of the art professional DJ tools can be found on the Pioneer website.

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Yesterday marked a milestone in technology, fifty years ago on 16th May 1960, Theodore Maiman and his team at Hughes Reseach Laboratory unveiled the first LASER. Since then, this amazing device has evolved and life without the laser is now quite hard to imagine. The laser is in everyday use in applications for industries like communications, military, data storage, manufacturing, surgery, retail and of course entertainment.

For those in the DJ industry, SEDA (http://www.seda.org.uk) marked this milestone last night at the SEDA ShowNight with an update on the changes in laser safety law in the entertainment industry presented by Will Perkins.

At the weekend, I was DJing for a client who had hired in a specialist laser show company to provide an outdoor laser show as the venue could not allow the more traditional fireworks display. The party goers were mezmorized as the brilliant show unfolded, the whole spectrum of colours was displayed, the beams moved incredibly fast - an awesome sight which certainly gave an incredible WOW factor. I do use lasers as part of my lightshow, but these were something else!

The future for lasers is also very exciting. Looking at the BBC website's science pages, I see that laser power attainable is now approaching a petawatt - this is a far cry from my little 30 milliwatt laser lightshow!! Reading on, it looks like a future application for lasers will mean that huge amounts of energy released by fusing hydrogen atoms into helium could be harvested for our ever increasing power demands. My dad who was a scientist (Dr G Mole, 1912 - 2004) was convinced that one day this would happen and the world would be a safer and better place without the need for nuclear reactors. He lived through an incredible period of technological change and witnessed all these developments. He shared all this with me with great knowlege and passion. Were he still alive, he would truly be excited by these advances in technology - I miss you dad.

Venues for weddings

As a mobile DJ, I have worked in many fantastic venues, and a few really dire ones over the years. The fantastic ones I write about in my blogs and on my Wedding DJ Sussex website, and there is a list of good venues I have worked in on the wedding venue advice page.

The really bad ones seem to be accurately described on the Trip Advisor website, so well worth checking before you commit to anything!

If you need an opinion on a venue I have been at, please feel free to get in touch!

I just wanted a screw or two..

So, it's bank holiday Monday, and I have a little DIY task which requires a couple of m3 or m4 screws and nuts, so I think no problem, I will visit Homebase in Broadbridge Heath once it opens at 10am.

I searched and searched, but could not find anything suitable. I just cannot believe how a DIY shop doesn't stock something as basic as this - absolutely useless. Halfords was no use either, and I ended up finding what I needed from a friendly neighbour.

What a waste of an hour :(

The Candy Box news boards

In Horsham where I live, there is a sweet shop run by a chap called John O'Sullivan. John has performed at the local theatre as a one night only type comedy night which was really well received, and I look forward to the next time he does this so I can go!

Outside his sweet shop, he has a news billboard which is regularly updated with excellent headlines such as these:

  • CRAWLEY GIRL GIVES BITH TO PITBULL EXCLUSIVE
  • LOCAL FIRE STATION TO GO EX-DIRECTORY SHOCK
  • STIFF OPPOSITION TO NEW FUNERAL PARLOUR IN HORSHAM

Excellent stuff John, we love them!

Here is a link to John's website - Newsagent Provocateur where you can find out all about him!

DMX calculator

DMX fixtures have DIP switches which are used to set the unique DMX address of that fixture. These can ofter be awkward to calculate, so you can find a useful DMX calculator on the SEDA website . It's simply a question of adding the DMX address you wish to give your fixture, and the dip switch settings are calculated and displayed.

A beautiful wedding celebration in Hampshire

Congratulations to the new Mr & Mrs T who got married on Saturday and celebrated in style in a beatiful venue in Wickham near Fareham.

I provided a high quality PA for the excellent speeches, and background music during the wedding breakfast, and later DJ'd alongside a function band. Everyone had a fantastic time dancing to a variety of music till the early hours.

Eyjafjallajoekull volcano

Well, that is one hell of a name, how on earth do you pronounce that?!  Last week, during the Easter holiday period, Eyjafjallajoekull volcano erupted in Iceland causing widespread travel chaos as all air travel was grounded.

Several mobile DJs were away on holiday abroad including myself, however as I travelled to Holland by car on Eurostar, I did manage to get home without any problems.  My colleague David for instance was less fortunate and is now stuck in Korea waiting to hear how the hell he is going to get home.  Luckily, with the help of the regional DJ association SEDA, we managed to get another DJ to step into his shoes for a wedding party in Hampshire.

SEDA provide support for members as well as training and of course the highly successful bi monthly ShowNights where DJ industry manufacturers, retailers and associated services attend.  If you are looking for cover for a DJ stranded abroad, get in touch with SEDA, as well as having 151 members mostly in the South, there is a Find a DJ database on the website, or feel free to call or get in touch with me - I run a professional DJ service for Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Kent based in Horsham.

Need a quality wedding DJ in Kent?

2010 is looking like a busy year for weddings, and in Kent, we are spoilt with an incredible choice of amazing venues.

There are a lot of professionals who work in the wedding industry including photographers, caterers, cake makers, dress makers, videographers, chauffeurs, makeup artists, florists, MC's - you name it!  And for the entertainment, again there is a varied choice including string quartets, table artists, magicians, jazz bands, ceilidh bands, function bands, and of course mobile discos!

The latter are incredibly varied, some are brilliant, some are just dire.  This can of course adversely affect your party.  As a highly experienced DJ, I ensure that you have peace of mind that you have booked the right DJ for your wedding before the event.  I like to discuss music choices and visit my clients ahead of their big day.  I provide a sound system which is of the best sound quality, so that no one is left with sore ears!  My mixing style allows your guests to enjoy the music without embarrassing pauses or vast differences in volume between tracks, and I do not 'rabbit on' like some 80's has been!

For a no obligation, no pressure chat, why not call me, or email me?  My contact details, information on my services and a helpful FAQ can be found on my website:

A little mixing trick for a party

I am a mixing DJ, so when presented with 2 party tracks, I have a bit of fun mixing them, it's soo much better than using a mic and saying something rubbish like "AAAH a great track from yesteryear - that was Areeeetha Franklin' respect, and now here is Michael Jackson and Billie Jean from the Thriller album - yes indeedy". Are there still DJs like this?

Tell me what you think!

High morals in the city

I see that many financial institutions are making a very healthy recovery following substantial cash injections from the taxpayer.  It is incredible to see that institutions gambling with ordinary peoples' money and losing it all would then be protected by us the taxpayer.

However, what is even more incredible is the apparent news that these institutions are rewarding their staff with such high bonuses yet seem unhappy to refund the taxpayer the enormous amounts of cash contributed in their hour of need.

I hear today the news of one such company which is rewarding its employees at levels which leave a very bad aftertaste in my mouth.

Anyway in an act of solidarity, and as I am very thoughtful of all those who are facing incredible hardship, I pledge to have any bonus I earn capped at £1M this year.

Snow, what snow!

As the country is gripped in a couple of weeks of freezing and snowy conditions, it's a worrying time for a few of my colleagues who are stranded at home with no possibility of getting out of their homes.  Luckily, in Horsham, Wednesday was the worst and after a few fruitless attempts to get to work , I decided to cut my losses and work from home.  Both kids were off school, and Helen worked from home too, so we had quite a noisy house!

Thursday and Friday were no problem as the roads finally got ploughed so I traveled to Croydon in my trusty van.  Luckily, I have just had four new tyres and a service as well as the battery changed, so it is more than ready for the cold spell.  This van is a Mercedes Vito, and it handles beautifully in the snow and ice, much better in fact than our family car.  The only downside is how long it takes to get warm.

This weekend we have more snow forecast in Horsham, but I believe this will ease for next weekend when I will be DJing for the first 2 weddings of 2010.  The first is at the stunning Amberley Castle on Friday and the second is in Aldermaston on the Saturday.
